The Air Mass Meter ( also known as AFM or MAF) is a crucial part of your car's engine management system. Due to the "erroding" effect of constant airflow passing over this sensor, it is more prone to accelerated wear than most other sensors.

Even when not shown as a fault on a diagnostic read out, renewing the air mass sensor at regular intervals ( say every 40 - 50 000 kms) ahead of any service schedules will almost always improve the following :

- Emissions
- Power
- Engine Response and clean revving
- Idle quality
- Smoothness and drivability

Some particular BMW models are known for having especially fast - wearing Air Mass Meters such as :

- E39 M5

One of the biggest common component failures on the E39 M5 are the mass air meters (MAF or HFM). These are a crucial part of the engine's management system.

Symptons of faulty MAFs include:

Poor starting
Eratic running
Loss of power
Eratic acceleration

The M5 MAF sensors are particularly prone to accelerated wear; even if your M5 seems to be running fine, and even if no error codes for the air meter show up on a diagnostic scan, chances are if your MAFs have not been changed in the last 50,000 miles then your M5 will benefit from renewing the sensors, making it feel more responsive and powerful.

Until now the only solution was to purchase complete replacement MAFs at approx. £500 each pair, however it is only the actual sensor element that fails and these can now be replaced using these Rogue Engineering items, which not only HALF the cost but are far easier to install than completely replacing the MAFs.
